Drugstore Finds: Maybelline Color Sensational Lippies

There's been a lot of buzz about Maybelline lipsticks lately so when I saw this display at Watson's I just had to try them out.

Elsewhere they have Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids, but on this side of the globe we have Bold Mattes and Neo Nudes. Not sure if they're the same thing (probably not), but we'll take what we can get.

All the colors looked great, but I have no room for nine more lipsticks so after a bit of a struggle I managed to narrow it down to just three.

It comes in threes

The packaging is pretty standard, but while the frosted red and holographic pink caps are adorable I do find the twist-up mechanism a bit flimsy. Like if you press a bit too hard during application the bullet goes down. The colors, however, are an entirely different story.

So I got one Neo Nude in Blush Beige, and two Bold Mattes in Hot Pink and Bold Red.

Blush Beige is actually a nice pinky-peach color which I think would make a perfect everyday color (especially now since Nars Napoli, the best everyday lipstick ever, is sold out everywhere!). It's shimmer free but the finish is pretty glossy.

Hot Pink is, well, a very bright pink; it reminds of the first Viva Glam Nicki, but maybe a touch darker. Definitely not something I'd rock everyday, but it is a very pretty color.

Bold Red is actually my first red lipstick, and I have to say I really really likey. It's a cool-toned red, and with nothing else to compare it to I'm afraid that's the extent of my description.

I have to say, though, that while the colors are indeed bold, matte they are not. Unless by matte they mean devoid of glitter or frost which is true. But as for the actual finish, satin is a more apt description, I think.

All of them are scent- and fragrance-free as far as I can tell, and they wear very comfortably. The downside is there's a slight tendency to settle on lines and flaky patches so I recommend priming with a good lip balm beforehand. Also the Bold Mattes tend to stain, but I find that's the case for most bright colors, high-end or not.

Anyway I recommend checking them out, if you're on the hunt for a new lipstick (as we always are ;p).
