Bullet Point Mondays: What I've Been Loving Lately

  • I'm having a love affair with huge scarves (that can double as blankets) at the moment; there is just something so immensely comforting about wrapping yourself in fluff. I also tend to get really cold easily, and we all know how crazy the air conditioning can get here in the tropics. The burgundy one is from Etsy, and I wore it to death back when I was in Germany. Nearly lost it too, and was in the brink of ordering a new one when it suddenly materialized under the hotel bed, thank heavens. The blue and green one I picked off the sales rack in New Look, and it is now a permanent fixture in my airport carry-on kit. 
  • I think plimsolls are the perfect airport footwear: they're comfy enough for sprinting across terminals (in case you inadvertently go to the wrong one like I do, half the time), they keep your feet warm and cozy (much more so than ballet flats), and they're easy enough to slip on and off as you sometimes have to during security scans (I once made the mistake of going through Frankfurt airport security in knee-high boots - never again). My sister gives me a lot of grief about getting them, because once upon a time she wanted to buy a pair and I told her they looked "pang-lolo".
  • I am also glad that white sneakers are making a comeback. Back in college they were all I wore (with denim miniskirts, natch). The pair I have on in the middle photo is from Keds, and they're like a comfier, slightly chunkier version of the classic white Chucks.

P.S. Clark airport is the best airport. Zero traffic, and only five minutes to clear immigration. And very maaliwalas (I don't know how this translates to English. Clear? Breezy? Bright?)

Wedding Guest Makeup v2.0 (Warning: derpy face ahead)
  • I attended yet another friend's wedding last week, and on a whim decided to give falsies a try. I've kinda just given up on them because I simply could not get the hang of putting them on after years of practice. I don't know what came over me this time, but for some reason I was overcome with a firm belief that it could be done. So I bought a pack of Dollywink lashes (No. 21) and a tube of dark lash adhesive (Duo) and by some miracle I was able to wrangle them on.
  • False lashes, I feel, have the most significant impact as far as eye makeup is concerned, especially if you have hooded eyes like me - you can blend eyeshadow for years and years and it would hardly make a difference unless you walk around with your eyes closed. These in particular are easier to put on because they only cover three quarters of the lashline. What I also found to be especially useful is to wait for a good sixty seconds for the glue to dry - I actually used my phone's countdown timer so I can't "cheat" and count faster to hurry things along.
  • I would also like to mention that Shu Uemura skin:FIT foundation (first impressions here), while drying when used daily, is an absolute godsend for special events and such. It took two minutes to apply, did not have to be set with powder, and wore beautifully until the end of the day. Very very very pleased. Like seriously, if you're on the market for a foundation, this should be high up in your list. Except if you have really dry skin. 
  • In a similar vein, I have also found that the secret to lasting curls is second-day hair, dry shampoo, and tons of hairspray. And the Babyliss Miracurl, of course. It is very tiring to do an entire head of hair though (the thing is heavy!), and I don't even have a lot to begin with!

Last but not least: Brows
I have been remiss on my brow-grooming duties for months now. The reason is two-fold: (1) I really hate getting my brows threaded - I would rather go through five Brazilian waxes than one threading session; and (2) I am down to my last prepaid session at Browhaus so I just know I'll be getting the whole fucking spiel again once I go back there. It's the most annoying thing. Who in their right mind pays for twelve brow threading sessions upfront?!? Me, that's who. It was the price to pay just to have my brows threaded in peace. This was also how I ended up getting an SM Advantage Card because my goodness would they not shut up about it. Anyway, the thought of being pressured into buying yet another multiple brow-threading package stressed me out so much that I decided, screw it, I'll just go look for something else and that was how I ended up in this tiny salon in Little India. It was very no-nonsense: you come in (no appointments), you get seated, expertly threaded (no tears, you guys, no tears!), your brows get wiped with a bit of rosewater and you proceed to the counter to pay. And get this - it's only 7 dollars! I did not get any irritation or breakouts as well, so I'm definitely going back. Let us not speak of brow-threading packages ever again.

First Impressions: Shu Uemura skin:FIT foundation

A year of walking to work under the scorching heat of the sun has left my face at least one shade darker. Unfortunately this also meant I no longer have a shade match in my favorite foundation (Estee Lauder Double Wear Light).

And so my hunt for a new base led me to this. I've never been successful with Shu Uemura products, but I was intrigued by the bi-phase formula - I haven't seen anything similar from other brands. I normally don't buy things without a fair bit of googling but as this was only recently launched it was hard to find reviews that did not read "press release". I did try it in-store and liked it enough to purchase and so here we are.

The Good:
+ It is very lightweight, but with ample coverage. I could even use it for pinpoint concealing (with a teensy tiny brush).
+ Decent colormatch (I'm using 754 medium beige).
+ No need to set with powder! I actually found that adding powder on top makes it all cakey.
+ It wears beautifully throughout the day - it's as hulas-proof as they come, even in oh-so-humid Singapore.
+ It comes with a dual-sided sponge to facilitate easier application. It really does apply the foundation better, even compared to a beauty blender.
+ The frosted minimalist bottle is pretty and compact (I really hate it when foundations come in giant bottles that contain a mere 30mL - it's misleading).

The Bad:
+ It clings to dry patches - face must be very well-prepped and moisturized prior to application.
+ The finish is more matte than I would have liked for a product that promises a "bare skin look".
+ It dries pretty quickly so you have to work fast during application.
+ I personally would not build it up to more than two layers.
+ I wish it came with extra sponges because I don't think it will last with regular washing (and it should be regularly washed)

The Ugly:
+ It has a tendency to oxidize - a swatch on my arm  turned orange in a matter of minutes, but my face stayed the same (thank goodness). At any rate I think it would be wise to walk around a bit before deciding on a particular shade to avoid the oompa loompa effect.
+ It's quite drying. After a week of daily wear, I started getting tiny bumps and rashes which is usually my skin's way of telling me to hydrate. I would imagine this would work better with oily skin.

TL;DR: Great, but not for everyday.

Bullet Point Mondays: Football

  • The 28th SEA Games are being held here in Singapore. Confession: For the longest time I thought "sea" meant water. It did not help that the only athletes I knew were Akiko Thomson and Eric Buhain, who were both swimmers. HeKaSi has never been my strong suit, sea see.
  • Football games are being held at Jalan Besar Stadium, which is a stone's throw away from our house. So it made perfect sense to watch our national team play at least once.


    • We picked the game vs Myanmar because a) it was on a Sunday, and b) we won't be severely outnumbered (as opposed to a game vs Singapore). Or at least that's what we thought.
    • When we arrived at the venue (two minutes after leaving the house), we were greeted by a kilometric queue of spectators, all in Myanmar colors. In contrast, the gate for the Philippine team supporters was nearly empty, save for even more Myanmar fans asking us to buy tickets for them. 
    • I wish I had a photo that showed how greatly outnumbered the Filipino fans were, but to give you an idea: I counted a total of twenty-three boxes in the stadium, and only two of those are not cheering for Myanmar. And out of those two boxes, one was half-empty, with a smattering of people who were there just to enjoy the game and not to cheer for any team in particular. A comparable scenario would be if Ateneo went against UP in a cheerleading competition.
    • I knew we were going against a very strong team, with an undeniable homecourt advantage (they had drums and bells and whistles and choreography, for crying out loud), so I did not have particularly high hopes; all I wanted was to experience at least one goal.


    • And at the 17th minute, wish granted. Sulit na ang bayad. And it put us on the lead, too, so the jubilation was real.
    • We did get our asses kicked shortly after (the final score was 5-1) but, eh, our goal was beautiful.

      Before anything else, we-fie muna!

      • So I'm not a football expert by any stretch of the imagination, but our boys did appear a bit lost in the field from time to time. I don't know if it's stress, or fatigue, or disorientation from getting hit by the ball on the head, but I see very little tactical merit in passing the ball to... an empty space. 
      • Also, the goalkeeper tried to pull a Manuel Neuer but couldn't, and this resulted in what could most probably be the most embarassing slip-up of this series. Sweeper keeper, he is not. To be fair, he never left his box again after that. 


        • After an action-packed first-half (I would argue that we may have been outnumbered, but not out-cheered), there was barely any activity from the Filipino audience during the final forty-five minutes. I think we exceeded our capacity to cheer - after all, we have shouted our hearts out for what is the equivalent of an entire basketball game, and that's what we're used to, yes?


          • Three Myanmar goals later, and people started trickling out of the stadium. 
          • As horrible as the score is, the boys weren't half-bad. In fact I would argue that it's better than the 1-0 defeat against Singapore, where we only made one, yes one, attempt at a goal, and not a very good one too.
          • Did I mention our goal was beautiful? 


          P.S. It is better for the soul if you stop watching after 0:27 :p

          Mid-Year Progress Report

          I really ought to have included "update blog regularly" in this year's goals, no? Pffft.


          Goal #1: Go someplace new.
          Does Cameron Highlands count? :p
          I am planning to go someplace in the fall, though.

          Goal #2: Read at least one book a month.
          I am surprisingly on track here. This month it's Of Mice and Men. I've been avoiding John Steinbeck after having to labor through Grapes of Wrath in high school, but now I'm in this phase where I'm revisiting all my required reading because I might finally have the maturity to actually enjoy them.

          Goal #3: Create a capsule wardrobe.
          Getting there! I do feel that my closet as a whole is more cohesive, and for the most part I have stopped buying things that do not make sense. I still feel like I lack a few key pieces, but I'm trying to spring for quality over mere availability so I'm taking my time.

          Goal #4: Learn something new.
          I signed up for the next level German courses, and I'm also planning to learn Japanese on my own. Would've wanted to dabble in a new programming language as well, but I'm trying to be realistic here. Probably when I'm done with German.

          Goal #5: Have a better grip on my finances.
          Am I tracking them better? Yes.
          Am I handling them better? Hmnmnmnmn.

          Goal #6: Yoga
          I'm changing this to Pilates. Primarily because I signed up for Pilates sessions at work, and realized how much I enjoyed it, and am now looking for studios in Singapore so I can continue practicing after the company-sponsored classes end.

          Goal #7: Simplify.
          Oh good grief. I confess I may have relapsed into clutter once again. But I have six more months to make it work, so... auf geht's!
